[#16] Bio-Dome Subbuteo Pitch

If one has played Subbuteo, then one has played the greatest table
game devoted to the beautiful sport of football.
Subbuteo is played just like real football, but it is eleven on eleven -
flickable, one-inch, little plastic men. The men have rounded bases
that allow the figure to slide across the pitch when flicked correctly.
A highly skilled Subbuteo player can flick his player around other
figures and curve the ball. The action takes place on a large surface
which could cover an entire dining room table.
To me, the game is a mixture of chess and billiards,
but is distinctly football. Subbuteo is also a very good tool to
illustrate the rules of the game and display tactics.

After three years in hibernation,
we are rolling out the Subbuteo pitch next week.

Angola eyes the free kick against Zimbabwe.

This was the World Cup Final in 2006,
and I was watching this match on a television in the
drivers area on a tour bus. Ben Harper had just finished
[was finishing] his set, and I snuck away to watch the end
of the match – just in time to catch the Zidane incident.
We were in Ireland at the Oxegen Festival.
The only thing I could do was take pictures of the television.

[#14] Svob Park

Robert M “Bob” Svob park sits on the quaint Vineyard Road,
and hosts basketball, baseball and soccer games daily.
This football goal sits on the East end of the field.
These grounds are fairly manicured, and watered by flood irrigation.
Once the sun goes down, there is pick-up games a-plenty.

This goal is near the southwest end of the park,
and has this amazing rust upon it.
It is sitting deep in right field of baseball diamond three.
The field is sharply marked, complete with penalty area and spot.

Early Saturday morning, while driving past my old school,
I had to stop and take a shot of the fields where I used to play.
Truthfully, I don’t know which story to begin telling.
There are too many beautiful ones.

This is one of the better facilities in the Chicago area
when it comes to watching and playing indoor matches.
The surface is of quality, and the top to bottom plexiglas
makes for a very watchable event.

When I was a boy in the 1970’s, growing up in Evanston,
these fields were dominated by baseball diamonds.

These well maintained pitches are a sign
of more positive things to come in the States.

A week before Christmas in 2008,
these youths were playing soccer [football] in the alley
behind my home. Their laughter and smiles are what
really stood out to me. Not to mention all the slide
tackling into the deep snow.

Next the furthest player, is the goal – which was a spare tire.
