Twenty Percent Theatre Company Chicago
presents
Top Girls
written by Caryl Churchill
directed by Elizabeth Schwan-Rosenwald
This intriguing play, written in 1982,
begins with a charismatic dinner scene
- hosted by the protagonist Marlene -
in which five historical women,
Isabella Bird, Lady Nijo, Dull Gret, Pope Joan and Patient Griselda,
share their extraordinary achievements with one another.
While the meal begins with humor and delight, more alcohol is
consumed, and the tales of pain and suffering surface to the forefront.
This is just the first scene of a play that challenges
and questions the positioning of women in society and history.
